Hi all:
As mentioned to Chris n Wendy, just been on short trip to Indonesia
(Jakarta).
Stayed in rural area one night (sadly, not for birding); out for walk,
and fish farm next door so had a look.
Right next to a poultry farm (with high brick walls, a small guard post
at entrance; couldn't see buildings inside), and this the likely source
of chicken carcasses and excrement that evidently the food for catfish
in farm.
(also some human effluent going in, but maybe only tens of people, and
plenty of ponds).
Saw chicken carcasses floating about, w catfish feeding v actively.
Also carcasses on small wooden platforms over pond; I was told so
maggots could fall into pond as further food.
Were bags of poultry manure in a shed, also apparently as food.
Nearby pond had some ducks, w fragments of (water) snail shells. These
snails perhaps harvested from the ponds, fed to the ducks.
"Integrated farming" seems a lot fancier when just read FAO documents!
While fish can't become infected, such ponds can surely become
reservoirs for virus. And if cormorants eat the fish, can the fish have
enough virus in their guts?
[note re cormorants: are lots in winter in Hong Kong, say, but no
problems w them here]
Plan to do a webpage w this and few other photos, email url to aiwatch.
Richard: may interest Pete McCarthy.
(Later to a Thai restaurant, saw catfish salad on menu. Err, no thank
you.)
Best regards,
Martin
