P.p.pyrrhula lebt in northern Europe from Scandinavia (about 70°N) and the White Sea, east through CIS (USSR) (to about 65°N, and south to about 48°N) to northern Mongolia, the Stanovoy range and the southern coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk; in the south from eastern France and southern Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Balkans to Greece, Bulgaria and north to central Romania.
Europoea: northwest Spain and the Pyrenees east through France (except the east) to Belgium, Holland, western Germany and Denmark.
Major: western Siberia east of the Urals to the western Altai mountains and the Yenisei River, south to about Semipalatinsk.
brevirostris: Crimea and the Caucasus to northeast Turkey and northwest Iran.
Zug von major: bird of race major regularly occur in Turkmenia, southern Uzbekistan, Tadzhikstan, Afganistan and northeast Iran.
